First things First manifesto 1964
So far our group discussion hasn’t been a direct response to the First Things First manifestos; though we have been covering many of the topics and themes that they address. With this in mind and in response to Ian Nobles brief comments last Wednesday and Eleanor’s earlier post of the article from Graphik, I thought it would be a good idea to collect together some online resources, such as links to both manifestoes, to help us get a better understanding of their context, what has already been said about them and who are some of the protagonists. It is in no way an exhaustive list and I will add to it as and when we find further material.
If we want to tame some of the same debate surrounding the existing manifestos with our own proposal then this information may be useful.
Ken Garland: Original author of the 1964 manifesto.
The 2000 manifesto in eye magazine + plenty of links to further reading.
First Things First Revisited By Rick Poynor in Émigré
A response by Michael Beirut to the 2000 manifesto.
A response by Jan Michl to the 2000 manifesto. I have not heard of this man before (not necessarily bad thing). He is a professor at The Oslo School of Architecture and Design in Norway.
More reaction to First things First 2000.

I have the book Looking Closer 4 which has a whole section purely of responses to FTF 2000 with comments from both sides. I am not aware if all of these essays are available online so I will bring the book in on Wednesday and if anyone wants to photocopy anything for there own research then you’re more than welcome. They should have copies of it in the library too.
