A pro\u00adfes\u00adsion\u00adal design\u00ader adheres to prin\u00adciples of integ\u00adrity that demon\u00adstrate respect for the pro\u00adfes\u00adsion, for col\u00adleagues, for cli\u00adents, for audi\u00adences or con\u00adsumers, and for soci\u00adety as a whole.<\/p>\n

These stand\u00adards define the expect\u00ada\u00adtions of a pro\u00adfes\u00adsion\u00adal design\u00ader and rep\u00adres\u00adent the dis\u00adtinc\u00adtion of an AIGA<\/span> mem\u00adber in the prac\u00adtice of design.<\/p>\n

The designer\u2019s responsibility to clients<\/h3>\n

1<\/span>.1<\/span> A pro\u00adfes\u00adsion\u00adal design\u00ader shall acquaint him\u00adself or her\u00adself with a client\u2019s busi\u00adness and design stand\u00adards and shall act in the client\u2019s best interest with\u00adin the lim\u00adits of pro\u00adfes\u00adsion\u00adal responsibility.<\/p>\n

1<\/span>.2<\/span>\tA pro\u00adfes\u00adsion\u00adal design\u00ader shall not work sim\u00adul\u00adtan\u00adeously on assign\u00adments that cre\u00adate a con\u00adflict of interest without agree\u00adment of the cli\u00adents or employ\u00aders con\u00adcerned, except in spe\u00adcif\u00adic cases where it is the con\u00adven\u00adtion of a par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar trade for a design\u00ader to work at the same time for vari\u00adous competitors.<\/p>\n

1<\/span>.3<\/span>\tA pro\u00adfes\u00adsion\u00adal design\u00ader shall treat all work in pro\u00adgress pri\u00ador to the com\u00adple\u00adtion of a pro\u00adject and all know\u00adledge of a cli\u00adent\u2019s inten\u00adtions, pro\u00adduc\u00adtion meth\u00adods and busi\u00adness organ\u00adiz\u00ada\u00adtion as con\u00adfid\u00aden\u00adtial and shall not divulge such inform\u00ada\u00adtion in any man\u00adner what\u00adso\u00adever without the con\u00adsent of the cli\u00adent. It is the designer\u2019s respons\u00adib\u00adil\u00adity to ensure that all staff mem\u00adbers act accordingly.<\/p>\n

1<\/span>.4<\/span>\tA pro\u00adfes\u00adsion\u00adal design\u00ader who accepts instruc\u00adtions from a cli\u00adent or employ\u00ader that involve viol\u00ada\u00adtion of the designer\u2019s eth\u00adic\u00adal stand\u00adards should be cor\u00adrec\u00adted by the design\u00ader, or the design\u00ader should refuse the assignment.<\/p>\n

The designer\u2019s responsibility to other designers<\/h3>\n

2<\/span>.1<\/span>\tDesigners in pur\u00adsuit of busi\u00adness oppor\u00adtun\u00adit\u00adies should sup\u00adport fair and open competition.<\/p>\n

2<\/span>.2<\/span>\tA pro\u00adfes\u00adsion\u00adal design\u00ader shall not know\u00adingly accept any pro\u00adfes\u00adsion\u00adal assign\u00adment on which anoth\u00ader design\u00ader has been or is work\u00ading without noti\u00adfy\u00ading the oth\u00ader design\u00ader or until he or she is sat\u00adis\u00adfied that any pre\u00advi\u00adous appoint\u00adments have been prop\u00aderly ter\u00admin\u00adated and that all mater\u00adi\u00adals rel\u00adev\u00adant to the con\u00adtinu\u00adation of the pro\u00adject are the clear prop\u00aderty of the client.<\/p>\n

2<\/span>.3<\/span>\tA pro\u00adfes\u00adsion\u00adal design\u00ader must not attempt, dir\u00adectly or indir\u00adectly, to sup\u00adplant or com\u00adpete with anoth\u00ader design\u00ader by means of uneth\u00adic\u00adal inducements.<\/p>\n

2<\/span>.4<\/span>\tA pro\u00adfes\u00adsion\u00adal design\u00ader shall be object\u00adive and bal\u00adanced in cri\u00adti\u00adciz\u00ading anoth\u00ader designer\u2019s work and shall not den\u00adig\u00adrate the work or repu\u00adta\u00adtion of a fel\u00adlow designer.<\/p>\n

2<\/span>.5<\/span>\tA pro\u00adfes\u00adsion\u00adal design\u00ader shall not accept instruc\u00adtions from a cli\u00adent that involve infringe\u00adment of anoth\u00ader person\u2019s prop\u00aderty rights without per\u00admis\u00adsion, or con\u00adsciously act in any man\u00adner involving any such infringement.<\/p>\n

2<\/span>.6<\/span>\tA pro\u00adfes\u00adsion\u00adal design\u00ader work\u00ading in a coun\u00adtry oth\u00ader than his or her own shall observe the rel\u00adev\u00adant Code of Conduct of the nation\u00adal soci\u00adety concerned.<\/p>\n

Fees<\/h3>\n

3<\/span>.1<\/span>\tA pro\u00adfes\u00adsion\u00adal design\u00ader shall work only for a fee, a roy\u00adalty, salary or oth\u00ader agreed-upon form of com\u00adpens\u00ada\u00adtion. A pro\u00adfes\u00adsion\u00adal design\u00ader shall not retain any kick\u00adbacks, hid\u00adden dis\u00adcounts, com\u00admis\u00adsion, allow\u00adances or pay\u00adment in kind from con\u00adtract\u00adors or sup\u00adpli\u00aders. Clients should be made aware of mark-ups.<\/p>\n

3<\/span>.2<\/span>\tA reas\u00adon\u00adable hand\u00adling and admin\u00adis\u00adtra\u00adtion charge may be added, with the know\u00adledge and under\u00adstand\u00ading of the cli\u00adent, as a per\u00adcent\u00adage to all reim\u00adburs\u00adable items, bil\u00adlable to a cli\u00adent, that pass through the designer\u2019s account.<\/p>\n

3<\/span>.3<\/span>\tA pro\u00adfes\u00adsion\u00adal design\u00ader who has a fin\u00adan\u00adcial interest in any sup\u00adpli\u00aders who may bene\u00adfit from a recom\u00admend\u00ada\u00adtion made by the design\u00ader in the course of a pro\u00adject will inform the cli\u00adent or employ\u00ader of this fact in advance of the recommendation.<\/p>\n

3<\/span>.4<\/span>\tA pro\u00adfes\u00adsion\u00adal design\u00ader who is asked to advise on the selec\u00adtion of design\u00aders or the con\u00adsult\u00adants shall not base such advice in the receipt of pay\u00adment from the design\u00ader or con\u00adsult\u00adants recommended.<\/p>\n

Publicity<\/h3>\n

4<\/span>.1<\/span>\tAny self-pro\u00admo\u00adtion, advert\u00adising or pub\u00adli\u00adcity must not con\u00adtain delib\u00ader\u00adate mis\u00adstate\u00adments of com\u00adpet\u00adence, exper\u00adi\u00adence or pro\u00adfes\u00adsion\u00adal cap\u00adab\u00adil\u00adit\u00adies. It must be fair both to cli\u00adents and oth\u00ader designers.<\/p>\n

4<\/span>.2<\/span>\tA pro\u00adfes\u00adsion\u00adal design\u00ader may allow a cli\u00adent to use his or her name for the pro\u00admo\u00adtion of work designed or ser\u00advices provided in a man\u00adner that is appro\u00adpri\u00adate to the status of the profession.<\/p>\n

Authorship<\/h3>\n

5<\/span>.1<\/span>\tA pro\u00adfes\u00adsion\u00adal design\u00ader shall not claim sole cred\u00adit for a design on which oth\u00ader design\u00aders have collaborated.<\/p>\n

5<\/span>.2<\/span>\tWhen not the sole author of a design, it is incum\u00adbent upon a pro\u00adfes\u00adsion\u00adal design\u00ader to clearly identi\u00adfy his or her spe\u00adcif\u00adic respons\u00adib\u00adil\u00adit\u00adies or involve\u00adment with the design. Examples of such work may not be used for pub\u00adli\u00adcity, dis\u00adplay or port\u00adfo\u00adlio samples without clear iden\u00adti\u00adfic\u00ada\u00adtion of pre\u00adcise areas of authorship.<\/p>\n

The designer\u2019s responsibility to the public<\/h3>\n

6<\/span>.1<\/span>\tA pro\u00adfes\u00adsion\u00adal design\u00ader shall avoid pro\u00adjects that will res\u00adult in harm to the public.<\/p>\n

6<\/span>.2<\/span>\tA pro\u00adfes\u00adsion\u00adal design\u00ader shall com\u00admu\u00adnic\u00adate the truth in all situ\u00adations and at all times; his or her work shall not make false claims nor know\u00adingly mis\u00adin\u00adform. A pro\u00adfes\u00adsion\u00adal design\u00ader shall rep\u00adres\u00adent mes\u00adsages in a clear man\u00adner in all forms of com\u00admu\u00adnic\u00ada\u00adtion design and avoid false, mis\u00adlead\u00ading and decept\u00adive promotion.<\/p>\n

6<\/span>.3<\/span>\tA pro\u00adfes\u00adsion\u00adal design\u00ader shall respect the dig\u00adnity of all audi\u00adences and shall value indi\u00advidu\u00adal dif\u00adfer\u00adences even as they avoid depict\u00ading or ste\u00adreo\u00adtyp\u00ading people or groups of people in a neg\u00adat\u00adive or dehu\u00adman\u00adiz\u00ading way. A pro\u00adfes\u00adsion\u00adal design\u00ader shall strive to be sens\u00adit\u00adive to cul\u00adtur\u00adal val\u00adues and beliefs and engages in fair and bal\u00adanced com\u00admu\u00adnic\u00ada\u00adtion design that fosters and encour\u00adages mutu\u00adal understanding.<\/p>\n

The designer\u2019s responsibility to society and the environment<\/h3>\n

7<\/span>.1<\/span> A pro\u00adfes\u00adsion\u00adal design\u00ader, while engaged in the prac\u00adtice or instruc\u00adtion of design, shall not know\u00adingly do or fail to do any\u00adthing that con\u00adsti\u00adtutes a delib\u00ader\u00adate or reck\u00adless dis\u00adreg\u00adard for the health and safety of the com\u00admunit\u00adies in which he or she lives and prac\u00adtices or the pri\u00advacy of the indi\u00advidu\u00adals and busi\u00adnesses therein. A pro\u00adfes\u00adsion\u00adal design\u00ader shall take a respons\u00adible role in the visu\u00adal por\u00adtray\u00adal of people, the con\u00adsump\u00adtion of nat\u00adur\u00adal resources, and the pro\u00adtec\u00adtion of anim\u00adals and the environment.<\/p>\n

7<\/span>.2<\/span> A pro\u00adfes\u00adsion\u00adal design\u00ader shall not know\u00adingly accept instruc\u00adtions from a cli\u00adent or employ\u00ader that involve infringe\u00adment of anoth\u00ader person\u2019s or group\u2019s human rights or prop\u00aderty rights without per\u00admis\u00adsion of such oth\u00ader per\u00adson or group, or con\u00adsciously act in any man\u00adner involving any such infringement.<\/p>\n

7<\/span>.3<\/span> A pro\u00adfes\u00adsion\u00adal design\u00ader shall not know\u00adingly make use of goods or ser\u00advices offered by man\u00adu\u00adfac\u00adtur\u00aders, sup\u00adpli\u00aders or con\u00adtract\u00adors that are accom\u00adpan\u00adied by an oblig\u00ada\u00adtion that is sub\u00adstant\u00adively det\u00adri\u00adment\u00adal to the best interests of his or her cli\u00adent, soci\u00adety or the environment.<\/p>\n

7<\/span>.4<\/span> A pro\u00adfes\u00adsion\u00adal design\u00ader shall refuse to engage in or coun\u00adten\u00adance dis\u00adcrim\u00adin\u00ada\u00adtion on the basis of race, sex, age, reli\u00adgion, nation\u00adal ori\u00adgin, sexu\u00adal ori\u00adent\u00ada\u00adtion or disability.<\/p>\n
