Honesty of Images

There were a number of threads of discussion in this area that came from discussing the idea of the union or a standardised body. We struggled with (and probably will through this exercise) to identify the one area that would make for good ethical standing in design. For Ben this was ‘honesty’. I find this really interesting as I completely agree in ethical terms, however I cannot see how this would ever be possible when ‘design’ by its very nature is subjective and a universally accepted understanding of images/culture would be needed.

Responsibility of the Visual Communicator

Designers have the role of forming language at a visual level and so a social responsibility for that content. This responsibility is compounded by the free access to media enables by everyone. The example given by the group was that we all have access to ‘Meine Kampf’. The question was should we have access to it and if so does it assume, should it assume that we are responsible in our consumption of it?

Design Discourse

As part of the design discourse element of the LLC P/T MA a discussion group has been formed consisting of:

Ben Dunning (me)
Emily Fox
Kemal Gezer
Rebecca Lee
Tom Longmate
Eleanor Maclure

Our first meeting took place on 10/03/10 in the LCC library. An interesting debate quickly developed. Our initial plan is to each re-read the design discourse briefs key articles and then post on this blog a brief outline of a position or idea that has been inspired by these texts or came out of our initial talk
