I have posted a link (I hope it works) to an article I found on Grafik Magazine’s blog which is a recent comment on First Things First 2000, by David Quay, a regular writer for Grafik. Going to show that even 10 years on that it still provokes a reaction. There are also some interesting comments on the article and further links including one to an essay written by Michael Bierut which was included in the book Looking Closer 4.

I tend to agree with a lot of what David Quaye is saying in this article. I think most of us have worked on projects that on some level conflict with our own ethical position, however explicit that association may be. For me it’s about where you draw the line, and about how far you are happy with compromising what you believe in in order to make a living / pursue your goals.
A lot of creative agencies work on the principle of having one or two ‘cash cow’ clients (insurance companies, banks), that provide the financial stability to allow them to explore more creative or socially responsible projects. You won’t have to dig too deep to find evidence of morally dubious practices in most banks or insurance companies.
For me it’s about having an ‘ideal world’ scenario in mind (i.e. working on creative projects for cultural establishments), and trying not to stray too far from your ideological standpoint along the way. But these are personal choices that we all have to make — the idea of a manifesto for the Design Community as a whole strikes me as idealistic, impracticable and confusing in its aims.
Maybe the answer is a kind of designers karmic credit system, black mark today, gold star tomorrow…:)
